Adobe AIR is a cross platform system runtime that allows web developers to develop and deploy RIAs (Rich Internet Application) like desktop applications.
AIR term itself stands for Adobe Integrated Runtime.
With Adobe AIR web developers can build desktop applications with HTML, JavaScript, Flex and Flash. In contrast to web applications in general, these AIR applications are installed on the desktop and can operate offline. Characteristics similar to ordinary desktop applications.
AIR applications have the ability to access data stored on the local computer. So in other words AIR can save, open, and edit data or information on the client computer. This is what distinguishes it from typical web application running in the browser.
